Most of the students have the same experience-when he is learning some knowledge which are complex but useful, he tends to learn them by rote. Instructors has long been debating on its merits and demerits.
Some people who oppose learning by rote criticize the method for its drawbacks are obvious. For one thing, learning by frequent repetition lead to unstable memorization. The fact is that if a learner merely memorize the profile and formation of specific knowledge, it fades away easily. Once the learner forget the basic formation, he is unlikely to recall it again. Moreover, the method is not applicable. Since the student does not deeply comprehend what he acquires, he is not able to put them into practice flexibly. Consequently, it is not possible for him to pass the exam perfectly and get a satisfactory score. For the third thing, the most significant impact of the method is it may stifle the creativity. It is common sense that create activities demand the capacity to combine different fields of knowledge. Thus, there is little possibility for the learners to make connection and come up with creative thoughts who does not even understand other subjects.
On the other hand, the supporters argue that the method is relatively helpful and time-efficient. For instance, some students find it struggling to imagine the vacuum environment. So they can not understand some theories. As a result, the lose stimulation on physics. The best way for them to pass the primary exams is learning the formulas and equations by rote. Nonetheless this would not cover its disadvantages.
In a conclusion, learning method is a imperative part of study. Learners are well-advised to learning things by understanding for the long-term benefits.
