Many people may have the idea that a good leader is a good manager at the same time.But is a good leader necessary equal to a good manager?In fact,a good leader shares many qualities with a good manager,but to say that these two are necessarily equal is unreasonable.
As a good leader or a good manager,you must know how to motivate people,maximizing their ability and creativity; you must learn to keep the door open as your methods or ideas couldn’t always right.Anyway,there are also many differences between a good leader and a good manager.We should first highlight that a good leader is the head of the company or a group.He or she must know the direction of the company and make the final and critical decisions.It is said that Kai-Fu Lee met one friend one day,and he found his friend,who owned a small company providing IT products,was very busy and had no time to sit down for a think.Then,Kai-Fu Lee warned his friend that his company was hanging by a thread if the situation continues.The company operated very well that time and it had a good market,so his friend was very surprised and confused.So why did Kai-Fu Lee say so?As it is known to us all,every product has its own life cycle,and for IT products the life cycle is very short,so you will have no market if others have developed new and better products but you haven’t.After that,Lee’s friend introduced a professional manager who took the helm of the management of the company,and he focused on the product development.The situation was just gone the way as Lee had predicted.It was just about one and half years that the company previous products lost their attraction and the market share continued shrinking.Fortunately,he had developed more advanced products with the help of his clever staffs.Actually,Lee’s friend is a good leader.He knows how to define the blueprint of the company; he knows how to motivate his staff to work out the new products with him; he knows he should be friends of his employees and he has really done that.But he remains not to be a good manager.
The same problem was also shown up in the growth of the Microsoft.As a start-up,Gate dealt with all the daily works of the company,including management and product R&D.But as the company became greater and greater,there were an increasing number of problems.The biggest was that the Microsoft and Gates himself were accused by many small companies for the excuse of monopoly.And in that crisis the company was nearly divided into two parts.After the crisis,Gates invited his friend-Steve Ballmer,who was also studying at the Harvard University when Gates was there,to be the CEO of Microsoft.Gates created a new position-CTO (Chief Technology Officer) for himself.
Of course there may be a good leader who is a good manager as well,but that is not necessary.The company may operate better and more efficient if with a good leader and a good manager respectively.
